The O’Pears, CQ + TRYAL
The O’Pears are a Toronto-based contemporary folk trio made up of Lydia Persaud, Jill Harris and Meg Contini, three songwriters who weave stories that stir the spirit and capture the timeless character of folk music. Like Those Nights, their debut album, captures soaring harmonies and a seamless blend, evoking the profound intimacy of Nick Drake, the sister-like blend of The Staves and the dynamic harmony of Crosby, Stills, and Nash.
As a composer, an Alex Samaras song goes precisely where it needs to go in order to fulfill the promise it made us in its first fifteen seconds. Many of our world's songs, even some pretty good ones, seemingly come into being through nothing so much as the checking-off of a list of ostensibly essential components. By the end of one of Alex’s songs, we’re moved not only by the sheer good old-fashioned gorgeousness of the thing, but also, whether we know it or not, by the bone-deep commitment to its subject and content that wrought its lovely, unusual shape way back when it was born.
